Hello all:

I currently have a Boxee Box hooked up to my home theatre system. Used mostly for Netflix, YouTube, occasional streamed shows, etc.

I was wondering about putting a more full featured PC in it's place that would allow me to run PLEX or some similar product with more features than the Boxee Box.

One thing that perplexed me about this was the spec that says "All-in-one (no OS)". Does that mean it isn't actually running a normal OS?

Any opinions on this or a better solution?

Thanks.

I've set up 3 of this similar units (Barebone version) so far as media centers with XBMC and they all run great. Perfect for watching you tube, browsing, email etc. None are used with Netflix so I can't answer that but I'm pretty sure it would be fine.

On all three I've installed Windows 7 and and upgraded to 4GB RAM. On two of them I've installed a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and in one I put in a WD Scorpio Black 2.5in 7200RPM insted of the 5400RPM drive. Highly recommend you go the SSD way.

Cheers.

Thanks Chicoman! So based on your quote, I am correct in assuming that they don't come with an OS? That adds to the cost obviously. Hmmm.

That's correct, you need to buy/pick your own OS flavor.
Pretty sure you can run Ubuntu though.

And if I did go Linux, could I then get an XBMC flavour that would be Linux based? I have read some about PLEX as it was recommended on some other sites, but I haven't done anything with PLEX or XBMC so in the end the solution could be either from my perspective as long as it works well.

Not sure how Netflix will work on these things. Netflix will probably play fine in the "Better" setting but it may lag like hell on the HD setting. If anyone can confirm or deny this please do so. Silverlight is a jerk.

Video:
Hardware Acceleration can be enabled for most media players to offload video decoding to the GPU.

Netflix:
I would imagine the CPU would be sufficient for running Netflix. I'm not certain if/how hardware acceleration (GPU) would be enabled though.

Windows 8:
This is a much better choice than Windows 7. Get Start8 if desired for the Start Menu and boot to Desktop.

XBOX ONE:
Considering the cost of this PC + Windows, the XBOX ONE is probably a far better choice once available. It even has HDMI input for Cable/Satellite I believe and you can use voice or motion controls or the remote. It has a 500GB HDD but another USB drive can be added. Obviously it's not a full PC, but it's probably the best choice for an HDTV media device (in this price range).

I doubt this thing could run 1080P Netflix, as silverlight is bound completely too the CPU.

If you want Netflix, then avoid Linux, no DRM Silverlight option to play back Netflix, so you would be stuck to using a Plaon server to stream Netflix from a local server.

Used PS3 or wait for the Xbox One are the best options for a decent experience, PS3 suffers from DRM though, so be warned.

If plex needs to do any transcoding then this box won't have enough power. I think they recommend a C2D at 2.4 Ghz or higher for transcoding. Otherwise it can probably handle most everything else.
